Wesley Golf Society
Welcome to the Wesley Golf Society.
The Wesley Golf Society was founded in 1998 by members of the High Street Methodist Church, Maidenhead (UK) - hence its name !!!!
Membership of the Society is now open to anybody and we actively encourage new members to sign-up and help sustain this friendly golf society. Anyone interested should complete the application form and gain sponsorship from two existing society members. The current membership numbers 40, approximately a quarter of whom are ladies.
The Society celebrated its 20th Anniversary in style at Maidenhead Golf Club on July 11th 2018. The Anniversary cake was magnificent !
The Society organises Stableford Competitions each month from April to October and try to offer mostly 18 hole competitions with the option for some 9 hole competitions to suit members' varied abilities. The society endeavours to play each fixture at a different golf course to provide a variety of complexities to challenge the skills and experience of the Society members. Most of our competitions are sponsored by Wesley members. At each venue the Society provides a post-match meal where the tales of woe and wonderment can be debated in convivial surroundings.
We have a Wesley Cup and a Team Trophy which are both competed for annually. The Wesley Cup was donated by the late Mr Ron Fenner of Settle, West Yorkshire, the brother of Stan Fenner a past Captain and past President of the Society. We also have the Binner-Quaich Trophy event where we compete in memory of Ray Binner a founding member of this society. The ladies and Men's trophies are competed for throughout the season.
The society may arrange an Away-Event fixture in the Calendar of Events if there is sufficient interest from the members. We would play and stay at a society-friendly hotel golfing venue within an easy drive distance from Maidenhead. This event would combine the competitive golf experience with fine dining and friendly social interaction.
The society is managed by a dedicated committee to formally organise and maintain the principles of the society. The Wesley Society AGM is scheduled for Wednesday 23rd September 2026 after the post-match meal at the Bird Hills GC fixture. All members are welcome to attend and contribute to the proceedings.
The Wesley Golf Society (WGS) caters for all levels of golfing ability - those with handicaps, those without, beginners to the more proficient. The main objective is to provide enjoyable golf and convivial social interaction! You don't need a current club membership to benefit from society golf. Most of the venues visited by the society offer buggy hire to those who need assistance negotiating the longer courses.
This site evolves from the original Wesley GS website designed and managed by Founder Member Sid Barker who built the site in native html code (an impressive but lost art). If anyone is curious then we have a snapshot of Sid's site available by clicking on the link below.
